A letter from Kathleen

At 68, I found the jacket that makes jeans look like a decision

I have always been a jeans and nice top sort of woman. Nothing complicated. A good pair of jeans, something comfortable on top, sensible shoes and I am ready to go.

It works. It is easy. But after a while, I started to feel like I was wearing the same outfit every time I left the house.

Then I found a jacket that changed the whole thing.

I put it over my usual clothes and suddenly I looked like I had actually made an effort.

That was the surprise. I had not changed the jeans. I had not changed the top. I had simply added one interesting piece, and somehow the whole outfit felt more considered.

Folded on the table. Even sitting there, it has more personality than most of the jackets I own.

The problem with getting dressed every day

I think many of us know this feeling. You find clothes that are comfortable and flattering, then you stick with them because you know they work.

There is nothing wrong with that. In fact, I still wear those same clothes. I just realised they did not need to be replaced. They needed one good layer over the top.

Most jackets I had tried were either too formal, too plain or simply not very flattering. I wanted something that felt grown up without making me look like I was going to a meeting.

Then I found this one

The first thing I noticed was the print. Cream, black brushstrokes and small touches of gold. It is bold, but somehow still easy to wear.

What I particularly like is that it does not look like a perfectly repeated pattern. The shapes move across the fabric, which gives it that slightly artistic feel.

With jeans and a simple top underneath, it does most of the work for you.

Hanging in my wardrobe. It is one of those pieces you notice even before you put it on.

It is the little details

I also started noticing the details once I had it at home. The notched lapel, the single gold button and the way the waist is shaped without feeling restrictive.

It is structured enough to make an outfit look polished, but it is not the sort of jacket that makes you feel dressed up when you only wanted to pop into town.

The day it arrived. I could already see how easily it would work with the clothes I already own.

That is what made me keep reaching for it. I did not have to build an outfit around it. I could simply put it on.

The first time I wore it out

Worn open over a simple top and jeans. Exactly the sort of outfit I normally wear.

I wore it with my usual dark jeans and a plain white top. Nothing else changed.

And I noticed the difference straight away. I felt more put together without feeling like I was trying too hard.

That is probably the best way I can describe it. It made an ordinary outfit feel intentional.

Three things I have learned

One. You do not need a whole new wardrobe. Sometimes one interesting layer can completely change the clothes you already reach for.

Two. A little personality goes a long way. I used to think printed jackets would be difficult to style. This one has actually made getting dressed easier because it gives even simple basics something to work with.

Three. The best pieces are the ones you keep wearing. I have worn this with jeans, simple trousers and over a plain dress. It works because the shape is classic even though the print is not.

Why I wanted to share this

I know how easy it is to look at a statement piece online and think, “That is lovely, but I would never wear it.”

That was exactly what I thought at first.

But I have found that the easiest way to wear something like this is not to overthink it. Put it over the clothes you already love. Let the jacket do the interesting part.

For me, that meant jeans, a simple top and a pair of comfortable shoes. Nothing more complicated than that.

If you are anything like me

If you have a wardrobe full of clothes you already like, but sometimes feel as though every outfit looks the same, I would start with one good jacket.

You do not need to change everything. You do not need to dress differently from everyone else. You just need one piece that makes the familiar feel a little more special.

Same jeans. Same top. Completely different feeling.

That is what this jacket did for me.

Warmly,

Kathleen
